Stocking Fleurs Temple and 13th age session Write up.

So having made this map out of my dwarven forge, I used it for a 13th Age game on Saturday evening.

This is what I stocked it with combined with a session summary:

The players were asked to travel to Fleur’s Temple to retrieve an Idol of the dark god of the huntsman by See’s Far Ahead a Druid in the Service of the High Druid who often takes the form of a Giant Owl.

I used the opening Icon relation ship rolls to figure out who wanted them to go on the mission and made Grimness (played by K8) who had a 6 with the High Druid to define her contact in The High Druid’s organisation. That done they set off for the mesa.

In the entrance room they found a trio of Angry Rangers (I used Gnoll Rangers with changed racial traits) and a band of Human Thugs hiding in the long left hand room. After a brief and unfortunately unsuccessful attempt to Bluff their way past them a fight ensued.

Victorious, the players discovered that the the small left room was a storeroom. In which the player found a variety of Potions, Oils and Runes. (I used the table in the 13th Age book for non cash rewards)

Up the stairs to the right was a strange broken Elven Oracular Device that the Followers of Fleur used to get information about their targets. Despite being broken it answered one question for each player after fresh blood was poured upon it. I gave them a freebie question from a 5 with the Elf Queen and had the device lie on a roll of 5 or less on a d20. The first question they asked was how to fix it and they promptly fed it blood from the recently slain Rangers granting the rest of the party a question each.

The next room contained two statues in alcoves on either wall. the left hand Statue depicted Fleur as a Dark Elf holding an unloaded crossbow, while the right hand showed him as a Wood Elf with an unloaded bow. Each alcove was carved like the environment each type of elf would hunt in.

A careful examination revealed that each statue stood on a pressure plate, in the carvings were  hidden small holes and each statue had loose Arrows or Bolts in carved quivers. Careful use of the Mage Hand Cantrip loaded each weapon and set of the trap firing darts out of the alcoves. Once both weapons were loaded a third alcove was revealed in the third wall showing a High Elven Depiction of Fleur. Another careful use of Mage hand placed a wand from it’s carved holster into the hand of the statue and revealed the Idol and it’s Guardian.

A Displacer Beast. I used the tables in the 13th age book and the ideas from the 4th ed version of the monster to make it.

Displacer Beast
Large 4th level Monster.
+11 Initiative
AC 20 (natural odd rolls miss Displacer Beasts) PD18 MD 14
HP 108
2x tentacle attacks +9 hit:14 damage
“Where the hell is it?” Once per turn; If you miss a displacer beast it can pop free and make a free tentacle attack.

Moving the Idol also caused the traps to go off again catching the players near the alcoves. Once they had the Idol and had defeated the Beast I let them retrieve the magical ammo and Wand from the Statues. They received a Wand of Aegis form the 13th age core book. 2 Arrows of Slaying and a Keen Bolt.

By the time they had finished off the beast it was beginning to get late so I slightly rushed the rest of the dungeon. If I had more time I would have filled the section hidden by Secret Doors in the southeast part of the map with Giant Spiders.

As it was I asked what the players who had unused Icon Rolls would like to find in the rest of the dungeon. Dead bodies with plot hooks were suggested so I made the south most room a cell with 2 bodies inside. On the bodies they found a torc suggesting a link to the High Druid and a Book of paintings about Ley Lines.

Then as they headed for the exit I used one of the players outstanding relationship rolls a 5 conflicted with The Emperor. I had a squad of imperial Dragon knights turn up reveal that the Idol could be used to  unleash the Wild Hunt and therefore they needed to take it into custody. K8 then asked if should step outside and made crude hooting noises. She cashed in her 6 with the High Druid and got carried off by a Giant Owl.

The rest of the part looked sheepishly at the Dragon Knights until Ash (played by Dan) piped up that he had a 5 left with the Prince of Shadows and revealed the receipt for “One Fake Idol” Signed by the Prince of Shadows that had fallen off the Idol when it was put into Grimness’ Bag.

We finished the session in a great place with a host of plot hooks dangling to make more adventures out of.

Where is the Real Idol?
What is with the book of Ley Line paintings?
Who was the dead Druid?
How will the players meet up with Grimness?

Dwarven Forge Dysons Delve

For my Game this evening I have taken this map from Dysons Delves and assembled a close approximation of it from Dwarven Forge.

Next up I am going to fill it with monsters and Treasure.

Weekend of Gaming

I had an extremely pleasant weekend Relaxing and playing games.

Gav gave me a copy of his new book, full review to follow. Age of Scorpio I am currently about half way through it and it is excellent.

As Saturday was #Tabletopday we played Hordes and had an ace 4 player game.

Then in the evening I ran Day After Ragnarok (a game that you should look at just because of this map) Over dinner I got each of the players to text me something they wanted to see in the adventure.

I got: Iranian Car bombing, Antartic expedition and Fighting Nazi’s/Occultists in a Norweigen Fjord.

So I started my Adventure in Tehran with the players escorting a German Mystic/Scientist who was defecting to the Commonwealth. I blew up the front car in the convoy and then started a massive combat scene with A Giant Snake an Angry Mob and lots of disguised German troops.

Several Grenades a Satchel bomb and a short chase scene later the players followed clues leading them to a secret German U-Boat base in Norway (unsurprisingly in a Fjord) Where they infiltrated the base, set explosives and unleashed a massive Wolf creature frozen in Ice.

All in all the session was brilliant.

We also played the first Achtung Cthulhu Scenario (Their kickstarter just finished but you can still last moment pledge if you want) Dan ran that session and we bungled through the mission with quite a diverse and unfocused skill set.

Finally on Monday Gav and I played Warmachine over a board made of my Dwarven Forge which looked Epic.

All in all it was an awesome weekend.

What did you get up to?

Weekend of Gaming

Today I weigh 14st 4lbs. Diet bet is going well.

The girls are off to Empire  but instead I am planning on building a fort out of boxes in the living room, Calling it my Fortress of Solitude and then ruining the solitude part by inviting a load of my mates over to play games.

Gav  is going to run a 10th level Pathfinder one shot, and I am going to run the Demo adventure for Dragon Age (as it is Tabletop Day on Saturday)

In addition to that I’m going to play a bunch of Warmachine and Hordes using Dwarven Forge as terrain.

Speaking of Dwarven Forge they have an awesome Kickstarter running at the moment. The Overseas shipping is still a little bit heavy but the sets do look cool:

My plan for the Warmachine Dwarven Forge Scenario is to co opt The longest night scenario from the Privateer Press website has some interesting special rules for zombies turning up everywhere so I’m going to import them and possibly have a neutral set of Celaphx roaming around the level.

I’ll post about how the weekend went next week. What are you doing for Easter or Tabletop day?

Magic Items

Short post today, here are some magic Items I am leaving in treasure hordes in This is Thracia as well as some I wrote for 13th Age.

Daedalus Wax
Comes in a pot with 1d6 uses must be melted and painted on the users back. Then once that day the user can Fly their speed for one hour. Potential drawbacks: while applied user takes double damage from fire. Fly spell dispelled If user takes fire damage while flying. May also cause feelings of overconfidence.

 Map of Groaning Ground

This Thin calf skin, leather map looks like the drawings and markings have been etched into the leather with fire. Enchanted by the dwarves hunting Living dungeons before they reach the surface for the dwarf King. It’s original purpose was to detail the insides of the dungeons as the dwarves hunt them. One side will show a large scale view of the land surrounding Forge, marked with the locations of dangerous underground locations. The Other has a map of the last Dungeon or similar place the owner explored.
Quirk, constantly wants to sketch a quick map of the local area.

Essentially this is a magical item that is also a plot hook and excuse to give the players a map of the dungeon in advance, or make it from Dwarven Forge, and then surprise them with the contents.

Demon Trapping Sack

Large Sack made of Strangely stretchy leather like Skin. (Demon SKin)
This Sack can be used to trap a Demon.
It makes one attack at Users Level + 3/5/7 by tier vs MD Success sucks the Demon inside the bag. The Demon gets last gasp saves. If it fails them it is trapped in the bag for a year and a day. The bag can only hold 1 demon at a time. If the bag is opened while a demon is inside it is let out they are normally very angry
These sacks are sometimes used by agents of the Diabolist to smuggle demons into places.
It is said that there are Vaults full of these bags and their trapped demons in the Golden Citadel.

2013 Dreamlines and Diet update.

Today I weigh 14 stone 3 lbs, I have lost a pound, which is pretty good as I have had my work Christmas do this week. Next week start on Total inches and more exercise increases.

I’m also working on Dreamlines for the first 6 months of 2013. these are not set in stone yet but the four that I think I want to focus on immediately are:

Top 4 for the first 6 months of 2013

Play Games - I’m currently torn between running a massive sweeping epic campaign and running a series of smaller self contained campaigns letting me scratch my other systems itch.

Go to Gen Con US with the girls. This is on the cards for August.

Help People - Similar to my Gaming Self Help Post I’m looking into the field of Life Coaching.

Physical Improvement - Slimmer, Fitter Stronger and more agile. The Goal for Slimmer is under 13 stone by end of March. I need to set targets for the other three parts and start working towards them.

Top 4 for All of 2013

New Car - As per my last Dreamline, This is probably one for the 4th Quarter of the year.

More Dwarven Forge - The Cavern Chasms set is now available in the UK and the Catacombs set looks amazing.

A House - At least as Nice as where we currently live. The first step of this is to save for a deposit.

Best Larp Fighter - This one has dropped off a little but I’m sure it will come back as the Larp season begins.

This is Thracia Dungeon

Inspired by this post from Howling tower and the reprints of the 1st edition Ad&D rulebooks here is a example of one of my Dungeons from This is Thracia.

Players from this is Thracia should recognise it as it has already been visited and cleared out once or twice.

This dungeon started out inspired by the haunted Prison dungeon in Skyrim.

Then I added a haunt (like a ghost trap) inspired by the Herald Volazj boss fight from the Old Kingdom Dungeon in Wow’s Wrath of the Lich King.

I tied both of the re-inhabitations together using one of the meta plots for my hexmap. Namely the rise of the Temple of Elemental Evil that so far my players seem unconcerned by.

Since then it had been cleared twice and may soon be restocked again.

Here is my write up:

Serpent Skull Finale

Last Friday night I ran the final session of my over a year long Pathfinder Campaign.

We have been playing The Serpent Skull Adventure path, and it has been a epic ride.

The sessions have ranged in size from 4 to 11 players (counting guest stars) and the final party that made its way into the Sanctum of the serpent god was 10 characters strong.

Seeks the Path The Human Oracle of Battle (Kate)
Gliiesh The Mwangian Druid (Dan), His pet Giant Snake, and his Lillend Bard Cohort.
Antol The Halfling Arsonist Freedom Fighter (Alchemist) (Drew)
Alain The Human Cavalier (Ceri) and her Horse and Paladin Cohort.
Toker The Mercenary Fighter (Matt) and his Succubus Courtesan.
Garret The Human Fighter thief (Robin) and his Red-mantis assassin love interest.

By the end of the fight Alain’s horse was dead, and Toker had been reduced to -110 HP (but saved by Seeks casting breath of Life to revive him) however The Serpent God and his high priest were both dead. The Party dealt over 3000 HP of damage over the first 4 rounds and finally killed him by striking off it’s head with a vorpal axe.

The campaign has run since April last year and for most of the year it ran weekly. We had a brief hiatus to start playtest D&D Next but have now brought the campaign to a close.

Of the 6 books my favorite was The Vaults of Madness a series of mini dungeons in the larger ruined city described in The City of Seven Spears unfortunately these vaults were infested with paranoia causing supernatural spores which soon infected the party. Who almost immediately turned on each other. Order was only restored when toker the only unaffected member of the party made a deal with a Succubus who Charmed each of his massively paranoid companions into trusting him. Making him de facto leader while they attempted to find a cure and explore the vaults.

Unfortunately this same adventure led to almost the entire party getting killed. Rather than scrapping the campaign and inspired by one of these articles from Chris Perkins. I had the party captured by Serpent folk who imprisoned them in their fortress city deep beneath the earth. Which had the added advantage of letting me modify the adventure to make it more to do with my players rather than some of the NPC’s.

Another Idea I took from Chris’ articles was keeping a running session guide for the campaign. (some sessions got more of a write up than others). Each week before the game I emailed it to the players and at the start of each session I did a short “Previously on Serpent Skull” scene to remind them of things that would be important in the session.

I can view my session updates and player notes here.
